I had several requests on Facebook for my chili recipe when I mentioned I was making Lentil Chili with Sweet Potatoes. I didn’t actually follow a recipe – I just made it as I went along, so here’s how I did it, with some notes on ways you might embellish or modify the recipe. Do [...]

Breakfast Links
Breakfast Links, originally uploaded by teeveeolantern.
The Italian sausages got a makeover with Southern sausage spices, and I formed them into little breakfast-sized links. After steaming them, I fried them up crispy in (what else?) more olive oil.
Instead of all the Italian spices, I used ground sage, a little ground ginger, a bit of allspice, [...]

Cream(y) Gravy
Cream(y) Gravy, originally uploaded by teeveeolantern.
I used the crusty bits from the fried tomatoes and the olive oil left in the pan to make a “cream” gravy. I poured in some unsweetened cashew milk (you can use soy milk, but make sure it’s unsweetened), a bit of flour, and a little soy sauce. Yummy. [...]

Okra Subji
Okra Subji, originally uploaded by teeveeolantern.
Instead of Southern (American) style fried okra, try South Indian style instead. It’s very simple and very delicious.

Seasoned corn meal is [...]

Properly Cut-In Shortening
properly cut-in shortening, originally uploaded by teeveeolantern.
Cutting in the shortening – I just use my hand like my Granny Pansy C. did. I’m pretty sure she never used whole wheat pastry flour or wore an Om bracelet. She’d recognize the proper consistency of the flour/shortening mix anyway. There should be small pea-sized bits of shortening [...]

In the steamer
In the steamer, originally uploaded by teeveeolantern.
This is how they looked all stacked up on a standard vegetable steamer (one of those collapsible basket types), laid flat in a large pan. I set the lid on and steamed them for 30 minutes.

Spicy Italian Sausages
Right out of the foil, originally uploaded by teeveeolantern.
A very spicy Italian vegan sausage, right out of the foil it was steamed in.
I’ve been going a little mad this week making Julie Hasson’s Spicy Italian Vegetarian Sausages, from her blog and web tv show “Daily Dish.”
They are just as easy to make as [...]
